Nov. 30th

Everyone got new words for word work. Some of us have short and long o words, or long and short i or an and ad word families. Every day we will work on becoming masters of our words and understanding why they work the way that they do!

In Science each table group started to plan their magnet maze! Tomorrow we will start to build our mazes!

Nov. 29th

Over the next few weeks we will be doing a variety of activities to count us down to Winter Break! Every year at NLS we read The Wish Tree. After reading the story each student makes a wish not for themselves but for other people. We will hang our wishes on the wish tree later this week. Check out our wishes below!

Today we learned that when r comes after a vowel it makes different sounds. When it comes after e, i or u it makes an eeeerrrrr sound. We brainstormed some er, ir, ur words and sorted them by pattern. Ask me to tell some of the words!

Finally we continued to practise decreasing number patterns . We flipped two cards over and that was the number we started at and flipped over one more card. That was the card we decreased by. Practice some decreasing number patterns at home!

-Winter PJ Day Thursday!

Monday 28 November 2022

Nov. 28th

In Math last week we explored increasing patterns and this week we will be working on decreasing patterns. Today we extended decreasing number patterns and found the pattern rule. Some of us even created our own decreasing number pattern. For example 32, 30, 28, 26, 24 Start at 32. Take away 2 each time.

Every word needs a vowel and every sentence needs a noun! A noun names a place, person, animal, and a thing, It can even name a feeling or idea. Some examples of nouns are: bench, Jurassic Park, Vivo, Serena, Dua, giraffe, kid. Ask me to find some nouns in my reading tonight.

Today we read My Brave Year of Firsts!. As we were reading it we looked for rhyming words and tried to make connections to memories and other books or shows. Lots of us were able to connect to times when we were brave and tried something new.

I forgot to take pictures today, but in math we created our own increasing patterns using numbers and wrote the pattern rule. For example: 2, 6, 10, 14, 18. Start at 2 and add 4 each time.

No school tomorrow because of Conferences. See everyone either tonight or tomorrow with their families!

There are lots of different routines that we have been doing with our words. We have sorted, found consonants and vowels and more. Today we tested our knowledge of our words by doing a blind sort. That is when a friend asks us to spell the word and where it should go in the sort. Everyone did a fantastic job with their just right words!

Below is the flag of Nova Scotia. We drew the flag and then wrote three sentences that described it. We are working on remembering our capitals and periods.

We are so lucky to have floor curling equipment in gym this week! We are becoming master curlers!

Today we learned that increasing patterns can be skip counting patterns. We used our hundreds charts to help us figure out what the pattern rule was!

See you on Thursday evening or Friday during the day!

Hello families,

Parent / Teacher Conferences will be in person at Northern Lights School this Thursday night (November 24) between 4:30 - 8:00 pm and Friday (November 25) during the day between 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. There is no school for students on Friday.

Families have their own booked 15-minute slot so there will not be other families in the classrooms at the same time. To help them stay on track, we ask that you arrive at the time you have booked.

When arriving, teachers would love to greet you with a smile and a wave, rather than a handshake.

Teachers will also likely wear a mask during your meeting time and may have their meeting table set up with additional room for physical distancing.

Hand sanitizer is available upon entering the school and on the wall in every classroom to be used at your convenience.

We hope you will pop by the Learning Commons for our Book Fair to browse what is available and say hello to Mrs. Barrowcliff, Mrs. Brinson, Mrs. Docherty and Mr. Newton.

If your child or other little ones at home are sick, we ask that you come to the conference without them to help reduce the spread of any illnesses.

We look forward to seeing everyone in a few days!

Today we created our own increasing patterns. We learned that a pattern rule tells us what the pattern has to do. After we created our pattern we wrote the rule using the pattern core and telling what part of the pattern is increasing. Ask me to create a increasing pattern and tell you the pattern rule.

 LIBRARY BOOKS

Students are once again able to take books home from our Learning Commons. Just a friendly reminder that students must return their library book each week. We have sent overdue notices home to families whose children have late books.  Lost or damaged library books must be paid for. Mrs. Barrowcliff has begun to send invoices home indicating the cost of the books. Please help us get all books back each week so all students can enjoy them and there is always lots of variety to choose from.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

We are very excited to announce we will be having an in-person book fair during our Teacher Conferences. The book fair in the Northern Lights School Learning Commons on the evening of Thursday, November 24 from 4:30 – 7:45, as well as the morning of Friday, November 25 from 8:30 – 12:30.  We would love families to come by any time between these hours. Books make excellent Christmas gifts and for every book sold during the book fair, our school earns a percentage to get new books for our library.

Thanks for your support!

PICTURE RETAKES

If you’re child needs picture retakes on Wednesday, you can send back the original proof sheet with them with a note to let the teacher know you would like them to do retakes.

If your child was away for picture day (or joined us as your new school after picture day), they will also need to have their picture taken on Wednesday.

Please make sure your child knows if they need a picture taken so when we make an announcement asking students from each grade to come down to the photographer, they go down to them.

Today we explored the magnetic field of our magnets. The magnetic is the area where the magnet works.

In Math we worked on creating increasing patterns. So of us even created patterns that had two terms increasing!

Today we started Words Their Way! Grade 2's were divided into groups and each group get words at their just right level. Each group had a different sound and spelling pattern that they had to sort their words by! Hopefully by learning what letters make what sounds Grade 2's will be able to spell more words when writing! If even helps with reading!

This year in Grade 2 we will be learning about three communities. They are Saskatoon in Saskatchewan, Meteghan in Nova Scotia and Iqaluit in Nunavut.

The field trip form that went home yesterday was missing some important pages.  A new form was sent home today. Please return the one sent today and get rid of the first on. Sorry for any confusion. If you can volunteer please email me at adpenonzek@cbe.ab.ca.

Today we created patterns of our own with different attributes. An attribute is what changes in a pattern. Some examples: size, colour, shapes, and direction. We also found our pattern cores. A pattern core is the part of the pattern that repeats in repeating patterns.

Today we created a visual journal page about magnetic polarity. After exploring with magnets we labeled diagrams of magnets either saying that the poles repel or attract.

Today we had a Remembrance Day assembly. Grade 2 did an amazing job of singing Light a Candle for Peace. Maybe I can teach you the song for Remembrance Day.
As you think about Remembrance Day take a look at our beautiful poppies that are such an important symbol of remembrance.
