 Today was a busy boat kind of day. In Makerspace we built boats!

Also today we finished and tested our boats! Ask me if mine floated and what I would do differently next time!

May 30th

Today was an exciting day in Grade 2! We started building a boat that floats, is stable, and carries a load. So many creative ideas. We will finish tomorrow and test them soon. 

In Math we are continuing to explore the calendar. 

Also our caterpillars are in their new home!

May 26th

We have some new friends with us in Grade 2! There are a bunch of caterpillars who are getting used to being in Grade 2. Right now they are eating a lot of food so they are in small containers. Once they are big enough they will be moved into a larger habitat. Today we went on a hunt for sticks to put in their new habitat!

May 25th

We have covered almost all of the vowel sounds that we need to know in Grade 2! Today we learned about two vowel sounds that can be a bit tricky! One is when a makes a short o sound and the other is when ea makes a short e sound.

Today we explored months of the year. We practiced putting the months of the year in order and answering questions such as what is month is two months after April?

May 24th

Over the next little bit in Math we will be exploring time and the calendar. Today we focused on the days of the week. We answered a variety of questions about the days of the week including: what two days make up the weekends, how many hours are there in a day, and what day is it two days before Monday?

Most of us have finished taking our jot notes and turning them into paragraphs. Today we edited our work to get it ready to publish in our non fiction books. Some of us even started our good copies!

May 23rd

      

Today we challenged ourselves by looking at equations that were equal or not equal or greater or less than. It was a bit tricky, but we are starting use our math brains to decide if it is true or false!

We made sail boats! Our challenge was to keep the port holes above water and make our boat balance so it could float!

May 19th

Today we were finally able to go outside! For Field Study Friday we observed what was above us, beside us, and what we thought was underneath us. We recorded our observations using pictures and words.

Today we learned different parts of a sail boat to help us in our boat building soon!

Grade 2's have been busy building their literacy skills through word work, word games, reading to self or a buddy, listening to reading, and literacy small groups. Take a look at them in action!

We have continued exploring measuring with centimetres and non standard units.

May 17th

Unfortunately pictures are not uploading again! So sorry! Today we continued measuring with non standard units (blocks, finger width, paper clips etc.) and centimetres. We are working on estimating and then measuring to find out how close our estimate was. 

Soon we will be building boats. In order to do that we need you to go on a hunt in your recycle bin for supplies that would be useful in building a boat like: water bottles, yogurt containers, styrofoam or whatever you think might work. Please make sure that the materials you bring in are clean.

May 15th

The question we explore today was: Can we make tin foil sink and float? Ask me what I did and if I was successful.

We continued comparing three digit numbers in math using greater, less than, and equal to. We also reviewed expanded form, which we had previously done with two digit numbers, except this time we did it with three digit numbers.

Today we did a community clean up in both Coventry and Harvest Hills. The Grade 2's did an amazing job and collected 5 bags of garbage!

We finished The Wild Robot Escapes which was the second book in a series. Students wrote about their favourite part and their favourite character.
