Sept. 29

Today for Orange Shirt Day we did a lot of activities connected to learning about Indigenous Peoples. We finished an art project that we had started earlier in the week. In each paw we wrote one way that we could be a part of reconciliation. Another piece of our day was in gym when we played traditional indigenous games that were used to become better hunters. I hope that everyone finds a way to honour Truth and Reconciliation Day tomorrow. Have a fantastic weekend!

Today we continued to work on our number sense by doing How Many Ways to make 12. Everyone used different tools to help them. Some of us used blocks, hundred chart or numbers lines. There were some amazing equations. The Smartboard shows some of our favourites!

Today we continued talk about Orange Shirt Day and how kids should feel at school. Each of us chose one word to write on a leaf about how kids should feel at school. Don't forget your orange shirt tomorrow!

This week at school we are preparing for Orange Shirt Day and Nation Truth and Reconciliation Day. Today we read the book "When We Are Alone." This story tells how the grandmother's life changed when she was sent to residential school. As a class we talked about what she couldn't do and how that made us feel. Then we brainstormed things that were important to our families like: birthdays, celebrations, camping and lots more!

We continued exploring how to represent two digit numbers through playing the Place Value Path.

On Thursday, September 29, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt (or an orange article of clothing if they don't have an orange shirt) to recognize Orange Shirt Day and National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for everyone to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community. Orange Shirt day began in 2013 when residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school. For more information about Orange Shirt Day please visit https://www.cbc.ca/kidscbc2/the-feed/what-is-orange-shirt-day

September 30 is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. The intention of this day is to recognize and honor residential school survivors, their families and communities. It also ensures that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. This is a non-operation day for the CBE. Our students will be engaging in learning prior to September 30 to honor this important day and to show our school community’s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action. Make sure you read our blog posts to learn more about the activities and learning students are doing in their classrooms and within Northern Lights School.

Today we continued practicing building and identifying two digit numbers using base ten blocks.

Today we watched a video created by Mr. Scout in his new job all about the Fall Solstice. We learned from Red Plume what the solstice is and how the Blackfoot knew that winter was coming. As a class we brainstormed ways that we know winter is coming and how our families get ready for winter.

NLS is looking forward to seeing families tonight at the Open House! Please come anytime between 5-7.

Today was our Terry Fox Run! We did amazing. All of us tried our best. We worked on sketching our shoes that we ran in!

In Math we worked on representing two digit numbers using place value and tens and ones. The number below is 39!

In Grade 2 we are using a variety of tools to help us become fantastic mathematicians! Ten frames can help us add. For example the picture below shows 5+2=7
