Sept. 26th

Today we did some more learning around Orange Shirt Day. We read Stolen Words. Ask me what the story was about.

As a class we brainstormed words about how every child should feel at school. Then we wrote one word on an orange ribbon.

With our buddies we tied the ribbon to the fence to remember all of the children who went to residential schools. At the front the school there is a timeline and story that we looked at with our buddies. They will still be out tonight so you can look with your family. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Open House tonight!

Today we did our first Esti-Mystery. During this task we are looking to build our estimation and number muscles. At the start each student makes an estimate of how many items are in the picture. Students then use the clues to narrow down what the number could be.

We finished our feathers with a word that describes us. Then we added our feathers to the display. The display reminds us that we are all unique and helps us remember all the children who attended residential school.

Sept. 24th

This morning we went on our community walk to Coventry School which is our evacuation site in case of an emergency.

As part of learning this week connected to Indigenous ways of knowing we each chose a sit spot. We sat in our spot and noticed what we could see, hear, and feel. Lots of us noticed small things like lady bugs that we would miss if we were not sitting still. Some us noticed that sitting in nature helped us to feel calm.

We read The Eagle Feather. Each of us is creating an eagle feather that is unique. We will be adding it to an outline of an eagles wing that will remind us of our uniqueness and it will serve as a reminder of all of the unique children who attended residential school.

This week we will be spending time learning about the importance of Orange Shirt Day. Today we read a story about what a girl brought with her to a residential school to help her remember her family. As a class we brainstormed items and memories that we would put in our suitcase. Then we created our own suitcases in our visual journals. Ask me what was in my suitcase.

Sept. 20th

September 30th is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada.   On Thursday, September 26th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt or something else with orange to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Students will be engaging in learning next week to honor this important day. Through read  alouds and activities, students will focus on understanding what they each need to feel safe and cared for at school and to consider this question: “What action can each member of our school community do to make sure every student feels safe and cared for at school, everyday?” This week is an opportunity for Northern Lights students and staff to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community.

Make sure you read our blog posts next week to learn more about the activities and learning students are doing in our classroom.

In Math we learned a new game called Face Off. There are many different versions of this game that we will play this year. Today we compared the numbers and the largest number won the round.

Our number for How Many Ways was 15. Every student shared a way that they represented 15. There were so many different equations.
