Feb. 27th

Today we practiced the e drop rule when adding -ed, -er, -est, and -ing to root words.

In adding we showed our understanding of adding two digit numbers using the standard algorithm using base ten blocks.

Reminders:
-no school tomorrow (Feb. 28th)

Feb. 26th

Today was Pink Shirt Day! We spent time talking about the importance of being kind. One activity that we did was creating ourselves. Then we read the story "Desmond and the Bad Word." In the story the main character learns that being mean to someone who is mean to you does not make you feel good. Then we switched our paper person with a friend. We said something unkind that was said to us or an unkind thing we have heard being said to someone else to the paper person. Next we crumpled the person because unkind things hurt. Afterwards, we tried to uncrumple the paper person. We couldn't! Just like when we say unkind things to a person, once the words are said they have an impact. Then we said kind things to our paper people. As a class we talked about how it made us feel. We agreed that we will NOT be a crumpling class.

Feb. 25th

Today we had a class conversation about what is bullying and what to do about it. We watched the videos below and learned that bullying is being mean on purpose over and over. Then we did a four square planner on what bullying is, what we can do about it, and how to be kind.

Check our our math warm up below.

Some of the equations that we came up with were:
50+80-80+20+30=100
60+40=100
20+70+10=100

In Math we played Addition Junk-Its to help us practice our addition strategies.

Reminders:

-please make sure that there is a change of clothes in your backpack because it is muddy and wet outside

NO FAMILY MATH NIGHT – IT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Our Family Math Night has been cancelled, as schools are not able to host evening events due to the CUPE Local 40 strike. If plans are made in the future to reschedule, we will communicate details at that time. Thanks for your understanding!

Feb. 24th

Today we continued researching about polar bears. Lots of us have lots of information in all of our different sections. Ask me a new I fact learned.

Today we learned about decomposing numbers into their place value (expanded form) to add.

We also learned about three other ways to spell the er sound (or, our, ar). These spellings only happen when the word is two syllables and the er sound is at the end.

Feb. 20th

Today we read the book below. As we read we learned lots of different ways that birds use their beaks. Ask me to tell you about one of the birds.

In Math we reviewed fact families.

We started researching all about polar bears! Ask me one interesting fact that I learned.

Reminders:

Feb. 19th

In Math we are using different strategies to show our thinking when adding two digit numbers. Today we used a number line to decompose one number and add it to the larger number. Students could decide how they wanted to break up the number.

We are learning about the doubling rule when adding -ed and -ing to words that end with a vowel consonant. We had to add -ed and -ing to different words and decide if we had to double the last letter.

Then we learned what -er and -est mean when added to an adjective. -er means more and -est means most. We used the doubling rule when adding the suffixes to adjectives.

Reminders:
-Winter Walk Friday, dress for the weather

Feb. 11th

We had a busy day in Grade 2! Today we practiced adding -ed and -ing endings to words that end with a vowel consonant. Take a look!

In Math we practiced an adding strategy called "Making a Friendly Number". Today we wrote down our understanding, but we are working towards using this strategy mentally. For example 19+7, I know 19 is close to 20 so 19+1=20, then 20+7=27, but I need to subtract one, so 27-1=6, so 19+7=6.

To represent our understanding of sounds waves we created sound waves that showed different pitches and volumes. We used bright colours because we were inspired by artist Alma Woodsey as her art was full of bright colours.

Reminders:
-no school Thursday, Friday or Monday
-tomorrow wear pink or red spirit day (you may also bring Valentine's or kindness notes for everyone in the class)
-Feb 18th is the 100th day of school so we are having a dress like you are 100 spirit day

Feb. 10th

Today we made a sound sandwich. Ask me to show you how it vibrates and how I can change it's pitch.
