Today we wrote using our four square planner from yesterday about the book "The Wild Robot Escapes."

Our school dragon paraded through classrooms for Lunar New Year. 

Today was our first day of Sound Centres. Ask me what I learned.

 

Jan. 28th

 Today we finished our novel "The Wild Robot Escapes." Each student chose four things that they wanted to write about the story and created a plan. They could chose a character or event. 

In Math we are exploring time and the calendar. Below is everything we could think of that we already know. 

We created a visual journal page about days, months, and years.

Jan. 27th

Today we drew dancing lions for Lunar New Year. After we drew the lion we used oil pastels. Our last step was to paint the background.

Today we learned about two ways to spell the dipthong /ow/.




Then we practiced using them in words.

Jan. 23rd

 

Today we retold the snowman story that we read on Tuesday. Everyone is getting so much better at adding details when retelling the story.

In math we used our strategy of using ten to help us when subtracting 9. For example if I had the equation 16-9 I can think 16-10=6 so 16-9=7. We played a game to help us practice. 

Our school is making a dragon for Lunar New Year. Today we each made our own scale for the dragon. We decorated our scales to represent us. Ask me what I put on mine.

Jan. 2

This week we have started a new math warm up routine called Splat. First there are dots on the screen. Students have to subitize how many dots are on the screen. 

Then there is a splat that covers some of the dots.

Students then have to show how many dots are covered by the splat. They use an equation to represent their thinking. For example for the splat above 7+1=8 or 8-1=7 so there are 7 dots under the splat. 

Today we read this book!

Then we retold the story using jot notes and pictures. Ask me to tell you what happened in the story.

Jan. 20th

 

Today we practiced reading and spelling words with the diphthongs oi and oy. 

As part of our learning around sound we went on a sound hunt in the school We recorded what we heard using pictures and words.

Jan. 16th

Today we explored verbs. We read a book all about verbs. Verbs are action words. As a table group we brainstormed as many verbs as we could in ten minutes. Then we compared our list with other table groups. Each table group had at least a few verbs that only their group thought of. We learned that each sentence needs a verb. Adding more interesting verbs in our writing will be on of our goals for the rest of grade two.

Today we learned about the hand model of our brain. Take a look at the two videos below for more information and ideas about how to regulate.

Jan. 15th

 Today we retold 50 Below Zero using our four square planner from yesterday. Many of us were able to retell using very specific ideas from the story!

We worked on the Doubles +1 Strategy. For example if I know 3+3=3 then 3+4 is one more so it is 7! Then we played a penguin game using this strategy.

In Science we will be learning all about sound! Over the last two days we have been learning that an onomatopoeia is a words that sounds like what it means such as swoosh or moo. In our visual journals we had to create at least 10 things that make sound and write the onomatopoeia. We also played guess the sound!
